Martin Ebner & the Gibo-Chan Orchestra

Martin Ebner & the Gibo-Chan Orchestra

Tuesday, 5.8.2025, 8.00 p.m.

Martin Ebner created the cinematic trailer and designed the outdoor space for Tuesday@Secession. He does conceptual work, primarily involving video, sculpture, and sculptural realizations in public settings, and is one of the editors of the Berlin-based art magazine Starship.

On 5 August, the Secession’s garden will be the scene of a site-specific installation with music – the Gibo-Chan Orchestra, whose name is a nod to one of the brand mascots fielded by many Japanese institutions and businesses. ‘Gibo-Chan was first seen in the streets of Sumida, Tokyo, in 2018. It was the mascot of the Edo-Tokyo Museum, which was closed at the time, and so Gibo-Chan now needed to fend for itself in Tokyo’s streets with the stunts it had learned at the museum. Later, after arriving in Europe, Gibo-Chan started splitting up and proliferating (on a modest scale), while also producing sounds that vaguely resemble music.’
